Entry Requirements

  • You will need four grade Cs or above at GCSE, including English and Maths. Ideally you will have the additional two in the sciences, but Level 2 courses and additional qualifications such as GCSE in other academic areas can be considered. Mature students will be assessed on qualifications and previous life experience
  • The qualification you will study for is BTEC Countryside Management. The course is two one year components, consisting of Year 1, 90-Credit Diploma and Year 2 'top-up' Extended Diploma. The full qualification of completing the two years is an 'Extended Diploma in Countryside Management, bias, Marine Biology & Ecology'. This qualification is UCAS Point translatable with full achievement on a Pass, Merit and Distinction based assessment equating to 420 UCAS Points (A-Level, A*A*A*).
  • Assessment is carried out by written assignments as well as practical work including field and laboratory based work. There are no exams. Students are also required to demonstrate employability skills, which do normally require a Work Experience Placement and students are encouraged in the course to take on Work Experience/Internships in their own time. The course is full-time, with year one Monday to Wednesday, year two Wednesday to Friday.

Curriculum

Falmouth Marine School is widely regarded as the top provider of this course in the UK, with nationally recognised lecturers. Academic units Coastal Management, Ecology, Fish Biology, Animal Behaviour and Biology, Aquaculture Systems, Estate Skills and Investigative Projects. Practical skills training Marine mammal observation, snorkelling and sub aqua diving, laboratory skills, organism identification, dissection, aquaria installation and management, aquatic habitat assessment and enhancement, small boat handling and fishing, public speaking and presentation, report writing and ecological surveying. Regular visits Marine reserves, National Trust sites, coastal and freshwater habitats, public aquaria, fish hatcheries and farms, marine laboratories, universities and colleges.
