Entry Requirements
Students will normally have gained one or more 'A' level passes with a minimum of 80 points
or BTEC National Diploma
or BTEC National Certificate
or NVQ Level 3 in a relevant discipline
The College also welcomes applications from students on Level 3 Diploma and Level 3 Extended Diploma programmes, introduced as part of the recent nationwide ‘QCF’ curriculum restructure.
Applicants with alternative equivalent qualifications will be considered positively - please enquire at the College.
Transferable/Key Skills and AS levels may be used to contribute to the entry requirement but they are not sufficient for entry on their own. Career experience plus evidence of study skills may also be considered.
Consideration will be given to non-traditional qualifications and relevant work experience. Applicants are encouraged to produce evidence of their potential to benefit from the course. Applicants who believe they may be eligible for Accreditation of Prior Certificated and/or Experiential Learning (APCL/APEL) for certain modules will be considered on an individual basis.
Prospective applicants will be given the opportunity to visit the College and may be invited for interview. On commencing the course students must complete a CRB check within six months.
Curriculum
First Year
- Personal and Vocational Development in Sport - This module develops key academic and vocational skills in order to bridge the gap between work, college to university; from more dependent to independent modes of learning.
- Cricket Coaching Principles and Practice - This module provides the theory of the coaching process. It identifies the main philosophies, styles and practices of cricket coaching. These include skill acquisition, delivery techniques, child protection, equity and coaching and the law.
- Applied Cricket Coaching - This module introduces students to the development and evaluation of cricket performance. It reinforces the main coaching concepts established in Cricket Coaching, Principles and Practice. It covers the psychology of sport performance, information gathering, developing observations, and administering feedback and evaluation.
- Introduction to Sports Science for Cricket - This module focuses on the three main areas of sport science utilised in cricket coaching; physiology, psychology and biomechanics. Students must apply these concepts to cricket specific situations in order to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the coaching process.
- Club and Community Development - This module aims to provide the student with the knowledge and understanding of how the role of sports clubs within the infrastructure of sport in the UK deliver and develop cricket to the local and regional areas. It also develops an understanding of the structure of voluntary sports clubs and function of those roles within the club.
- The Delivery of Sport and Physical Activity - This module aims to provide an understanding of the major frameworks of delivery structure, relating to the provision of and support for sport and physical activity within the UK. The role of the different sectors, public, private or voluntary will also be explored.
- Work Placement - This module aims to provide students with and claim credit for experiential learning opportunities within the sport of cricket and provide the student with the opportunity to undertake personal self development and the acquisition of key generic and transferable skills for the workplace. It also provides a setting where theory and practice can be integrated within the field of cricket coaching.
- Cricket Coaching Observation and Analysis - This module provides a framework in which cricket coaches can apply the coaching process and develop techniques to evaluate cricket performance. This will include a review of pertinent scientific elements of training/performance with students engaging in appropriate coaching practicals to elaborate upon the theoretical themes.
- Coaching in Cricket - This module gives the student the opportunity to develop and appreciate the skills, techniques and strategies in cricket. It develops an awareness in students of the demands and considerations of cricket coaching.
- Sport Events - This module aims to develop the students' skills in the planning and organisation of sports events based around cricket. The module provides the theoretical knowledge of event planning and its management which is then put into practice in planning/managing and funding/resourcing a sports event to be held locally.
- Talent Identification and Pathways - The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of performance pathways developed by organisations to develop players to their full potential. The module will also examine the support mechanisms which aid in this development.
- Research Project - The aim of this module is to develop the ability of students to undertake investigative research within the sport of cricket. The module will include information - related academic and market research skills, research methodology, data collection techniques, data analysis and writing skills.
