The Doctor of Philosophy (Information Technology) is a comprehensive research-based doctoral program that enables students to delve into a subject of their preference under the guidance of an expert in the respective field.
The culmination of the program entails the development of a prototype system, providing students with ample room to satisfy their innate curiosity and penchant for addressing challenges.
The program emphasizes practical applications over theoretical advancements in computer science theory, offering a fully research-oriented curriculum. Additionally, students may have the opportunity to serve as Graduate Research Assistants, potentially receiving partial funding through Industry and Government Research Grants while collaborating with the Principal Investigator.

Entry Requirements
Programme Entry Requirements
- A Master’s Degree (Level 7, MQF) in the in the field of Computing or related fields as accepted by the UNITAR Senate; OR
- A Master’s degree (Level 7, MQF) in non Computing fields with a minimum of FIVE (5) years of working experience in the field of computing or related fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses as determined by the UNITAR; OR
- Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s degree in the field of Computing or related fields recognised by the Government of Malaysia must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses as determined by the UNITAR.
- *A Master’s degree (Level 7, MQF) in non Computing fields with less than FIVE (5) years of working experience in the field of computing or related fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses as determined by the HEP and subject to rigorous internal assessment.
(*Rigorous internal assessment and their working experiences will determine the appropriate prerequisite courses required for candidates. If the assessment fulfils the requirements, the candidates can be exempted from taking the prerequisite courses.)
AND
- A proposal of about 500 words in English must be submitted together with all the relevant documents required for admission to the University on the registration day.
Note for PhD by Research
- There is no direct entry from the Degree’s programme to the Doctoral level;
- Qualified Degree’s candidates who enroll for a Master’s program, can apply to change their studies to a Doctorate program within (1) one year after signing for Master’s program and subject to the following provisions;
- Have demonstrated competence and capability in conducting research at Doctoral level;
- Rigorous internal assessment by UNITAR; and
- Approval from UNITAR Senate.
