The Integrated Sustainability & Urban Creativity Centre (ISUC) at the Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainable living, community engagement, and care for the marginalised.
On October 7, 2023, ISUC organised a unique workshop entitled Rags to Richness. The workshop, held at the Persatuan Kreatif Kanak-Kanak Tunku Bainun (PKKTB), brought together 10 girls between the ages of 15 and 17 years old, along with two of their teachers.
This collaborative initiative was made possible through the partnership between ISUC and the Soroptimist International Club of Shah Alam (SISA), a club dedicated to empowering women and girls. Ms. Fadzilah Yasin and Ms. Faridah Yasin, both distinguished members of the Executive Committee of SISA, played pivotal roles in ensuring the success of the event.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12, which seeks to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns, the Rags to Richness workshop revolved around the theme of creativity and sustainability.
Participants in the workshop learned how to transform used t-shirts into beautiful rugs and coasters through innovative recycling techniques. These handmade creations will be put up for sale, with the proceeds going toward fundraising efforts to support various charitable causes.
During the workshop, participants carefully braided pieces cut from used t-shirts, showcasing their dedication in promoting sustainable practices and creative thinking.
"The Rags to Richness workshop was more than just a crafting event; it was an opportunity for these young individuals to contribute to their community and the environment whilst learning essential skills," said Ms. Cynthia Mala Paul Dorairaj, ISUC Student Chapter Advisor.
The members of APU’s ISUC Student Chapter look forward to more opportunities that allow them to make a difference, foster a sense of community, and work collectively toward a brighter and more sustainable future.
In another demonstration of its commitment to community engagement and social responsibility, ISUC recently joined the School of Business (SoB) at APU for a visit to an old folks' home in Petaling Jaya on September 1, 2023.
During this visit, the group donated RM250 worth of cooked meals and dried food to support 38 elders residing at the home. More than just a donation, the students engaged in meaningful conversations with the senior citizens, bridging the generation gap and creating a sense of connection.
The highlight of the visit was an interactive session where students and residents of the old folks' home participated in various activities, including storytelling and feeding the elderly. ISUC and SoB encourage the APU community to continue making a positive impact on society, fostering a culture of empathy, compassion, and community involvement.
