The Certified Industrial Designer (CiDE) recognition highlights Mr Saifullizan Abdul Wahab’s influence in industrial design education and practice, positioning him as a trailblazer in the product and transport design industry.
The Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU)’s School of Media, Arts and Design (SoMAD) proudly celebrates a remarkable achievement as lecturer Mr Saifullizan Abdul Wahab receives the prestigious Certified Industrial Designer (CiDE) recognition.
This distinguished accolade was conferred upon him at the Malaysian Design Council (MRM) Industry Dialogue and Certified Industrial Designer 2024 Certification Ceremony, held on December 12, 2024, at Dewan Perdana, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Tower, Kuala Lumpur.
Saifullizan’s recognition is a testament to his unwavering dedication and expertise in product and transport design. His journey, marked by passion and perseverance, has made a significant impact in the field.
A Legacy of Innovation in Industrial Design
Saifullizan’s illustrious career began with a Bachelor of Industrial Design, followed by a Master of Art and Design (by Research) from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). In 1997, he embarked on his professional journey as an automotive designer at Perodua Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd., where he played a pivotal role in developing some of Malaysia’s most iconic vehicles, including the Perodua Rusa, Kancil, Kembara, Kelisa, MyVi, Alza, and Axia.
One of the highlights of his career was leading the interior concept design for the Perodua Bezza, which he proudly showcased at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010.
Inspiring Future Generations Through Mentorship
Beyond his design achievements, Saifullizan is an influential mentor, shaping the next generation of industrial designers. Under his guidance, APU students have consistently excelled in prestigious competitions, securing top accolades in:
- 2023 Asian Compact Sedan Design Challenge (ACSDC) – Champions
- 2022 Art of Wheels: Rim Design Challenge (1st Runner-up)
- 2021 Water Pod Project – James Dyson Design Competition (Champions)
- 2018 Invictus Project – DRB Hicom Concept Car Design Competition (Champions)
- 2014 Elderly Design Competition (Champions)
Reflecting on his CiDE achievement, Saifullizan remarked, “Receiving this certification underscores the profound impact of design, which extends beyond aesthetics. It highlights the crucial role of creativity and functionality in solving real-world challenges, fostering innovation, and shaping identities. This is the philosophy we instil in our students at APU.”

Saifullizan attributes his success to lifelong learning, staying ahead of industry trends, and hands-on experience. “The journey to CiDE certification is about embracing knowledge and challenging the status quo. It’s not just about design; it’s about contributing to the future of industrial design,” he shared.
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to APU’s CEO, Datuk Parmjit Singh, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in his personal and professional growth. “Datuk Parmjit’s encouragement has been a driving force for me and the entire SoMAD team,” he added.
Honoured Among Malaysia’s Elite Designers
At the ceremony, Saifullizan joins an exclusive group of 24 local designers who were honoured with the CiDE 2024 certification. This recognition not only highlights Saifullizan’s exceptional talent but also reinforces APU’s commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in design education. His achievement is a source of pride for the institution and a beacon of inspiration for aspiring designers.
