Do you dare to test your skills and prove your expertise in an intercollegiate competition? Twelve ambitious students from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) did just that, stepping beyond their comfort zones to compete in the prestigious Accounting Quizard 2025.
Recognising the value of academic competitions in honing technical knowledge, teamwork, and resilience, these students seized the opportunity to challenge themselves against top talent from universities across Malaysia. Their outstanding performance not only showcased their accounting acumen but also highlighted APU’s excellence in accounting and finance education.
A Battle of the Best in Accounting

The Accounting Quizard 2025, organised by the Accounting Society of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), was held on 22nd February 2025 at UTAR’s Sungai Long campus in Selangor. Under the guidance of Ms Phuah Eng Sze, Senior Lecturer at APU’s School of Accounting & Finance (SoAF), the students participated in this highly competitive event.
The competition, sponsored by the international accounting firm Grant Thornton, was designed to test students’ competencies in Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation, Audit & Assurance, and Financial Reporting. It also served as an invaluable platform for aspiring accountants to network, apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, and refine their problem-solving skills.
With teams from renowned institutions such as Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Monash University, Raffles University of Iskandar, and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology, the competition was fierce.
APU’s Triumph in the Junior Category

APU’s students participated in the Junior category, which featured Year 1 and Year 2 students. The competition format involved teams of three tackling rigorous written quizzes in both preliminary and final rounds. Out of 13 participating teams, two APU teams secured the highest scores, advancing to the final round and ultimately clinching the top two prizes.
The First Prize was awarded to: Siew Mei Hsia (Team Lead), Fion Lai Jin Yu, and Wendy Loh Jing Wen. All three are pursuing a Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (Honours) with a specialism in Accounting Technology. They took home a cash prize of RM500 for their stellar performance.

We are incredibly proud that we won and truly feel that all three of us gave our best and contributed effectively.”
The Second Prize went to: Nikhil Vijay (Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (Honours) with a specialism in Accounting Technology), Muhammad Umair Moniaruth (Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (Honours)), and Rachel Kong Syn Yue (Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (Honours) with a specialism in Forex and Investments)
This team secured a well-deserved RM400 cash prize, cementing APU’s dominance in the category.

This achievement has reinforced my passion for accounting and finance, and I am grateful to APU, our dedicated lecturers, and my teammates for making this experience both enriching and rewarding,” enthused Muhammad Umair Moniaruth, who led the team.
Beyond the Classroom – APU’s Commitment to Real-World Learning
Speaking on the students’ success, Ms Phuah Eng Sze commended their dedication and perseverance. “Beyond developing technical knowledge, analytical skills, and professional competencies in the classroom, these students dared to test themselves on a broader stage. Competitions like this offer a practical way to assess their abilities and discover areas for improvement.”
Echoing this sentiment, Associate Professor Dr Chong Lee Lee, Head of SoAF, emphasised the importance of experiential learning. “At APU, we prioritise real-world exposure beyond classroom training. Competing against students from other universities serves as an excellent benchmark for our students to measure their capabilities and gain insights into their future professional journeys. This is undoubtedly the best way to bridge the gap between academia and industry.”
