Doctor of Philosophy in Biology

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biology is designed to produce graduates who possess critical thinking skills, a passion for lifelong learning, and the expertise required to meet both national and global demands in biology. Graduates will become skilled scientists capable of synthesizing and applying knowledge through innovative research, problem-solving, and creative solutions in academic and industrial life sciences, as well as interdisciplinary fields.

The program provides a solid foundation in science and advanced research skills, fostering the ability to critically analyze, apply, and synthesize biological concepts. Students are trained to utilize scientific methods to solve problems while adhering to ethical principles. Additionally, the program develops effective communication skills, independence, teamwork, and strong cognitive abilities in scientific research. Graduates will also acquire leadership, entrepreneurial, and information management skills, preparing them to be lifelong learners. Students benefit from personalized research guidance from experienced faculty, with exposure to workshops, symposiums, and conferences. Before enrolling, candidates must consult with qualified supervisors to determine their research focus.

Master’s Degree

• A Master’s degree in a biological sciences discipline or related fields that is accepted by University Senate.

Other Qualifications

• Any other qualifications will be considered on a case-to-case basis and subject to the approval and acceptance by the University Senate.

English Language Requirements

Any of the following

• IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
• TOEFL 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (internet-based)
• PTE Academic 50 overall (minimum 46 in each skill)

For International/Malaysian applicants
English is the medium of instruction of the previous degree for candidates from universities in non-English speaking countries outside Malaysia.

Statement of Research Interest (needed for application)

The research statement/proposal should have 1,000 words (excluding references) and covers the following structure:

1. An appropriate title for the research project (designated supervisor if known)
2. Introduction (justification of the study or research gap)
3. Problem statement
4. Research Question(s)
5. Research objective(s)
6. Literature review
7. Research methodology
8. Proposed research schedule
9. List of references

Thesis

The PhD is awarded based on the successful completion of a thesis. The thesis should demonstrate proficiency, criticality and mastery in the subject or chosen area of research.
