Accommodation

The Glasgow School of Art offers new undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to stay in one of two purpose-built halls of residence; Blythswood House, and Margaret Macdonald House. Both sites are located in the city centre, close to amenities and travel links, and within five minutes’ walk of the main GSA Garnethill campus. All our halls are secure and fully-furnished, making your move to study in Glasgow as stress-free and comfortable as possible.

If you have decided not to live in the Glasgow School of Art's Halls of Residence or have not been offered a place, then you may wish to look for accommodation in the Private Sector. This is usually housing rented out by independent landlords, by sharing with a number of other students, or living in the landlord's own home. Living in the Private Sector could mean paying Council Tax. Council Tax is a tax levied on adults for the maintenance of services offered to the public such as water and road maintenance.

Campus

Learning Resources at the GSA comprises the Library, Archives and Collections and the virtual learning environment (VLE). The Library of the Glasgow School of Art has one of the finest art, design and architecture collections in the UK. Our aim is to provide students and staff with access to high quality information, resources and services including access to a wide array of ICT facilities.

Whatever programme you are embarking on at GSA, space and time to experiment with your materials is indispensable. The Technical Support Department provide the facilities and expertise to support the work of specialist areas of study whilst also offering the opportunity to access resources outside of conventional discipline boundaries. We offer a tiered service ranging from drop-in facilities available to all students (following induction) to specialist facilities embedded within academic departments. These are:

Core Drop-In Facilties

  • Generally open to students from across the School following induction
    • 3D Making workshop
    • Media Studio

Specialist Accessible Facilities

  • Mainly linked to a department, but access can be negotiated if required for your project
    • Mould-Making and Casting Workshop (Prioritised access for Sculpture and Environmental Art, MLitt Fine Art Practice, MFA students)
    • Photographic Facilities (Prioritised access for Fine Art Photography, MLitt Fine Art Practice, MFA, Communication Design and Architecture students)
    • Case Room (Prioritised access for Communication Design students)

Specialist Embedded Facilities

  • Embedded within a department and reserved for use by its students
    • Printmaking Workshops (Painting & Printmaking, MLitt Fine Art Practice - Print Media pathway)
    • Fashion + Textiles Workshops
    • Silversmithing & Jewellery Workshops

Glasgow School of Art Sport is a new grass roots association run by students with an aim to encourage sport and activity throughout the university. Since it began in 2013, 16 sports have been represented at The Glasgow School of Art and 11 clubs have affiliated to GSA Sport. For instance, hockey, racket sports, football, rugby, swimming, ski and snowboard club.

GSA is located at the top of Garnethill in Glasgow's easy to navigate city centre.

  • By train:  15 minutes walk from Glasgow's 2 main railway stations; Central Station and Queen Street Station.
  • BY Subway:  5 minutes walk from Cowcaddens Subway Station.
  • By car:  2 minutes walk from the LLP car park at Cambridge Street. There are also plenty of parking spaces in the streets surrounding the School and we sell parking vouchers in the GSA Shop (parking in the surrounding streets is controlled by Glasgow City Council).
  • By bus:  First buses 16, 18, 44, 44a and 57 all stop near the School.
